Museum workers to management:

Cut waste not workers!

OTTAWA ….Public Service Alliance of Canada members working as Security Officers at the Museum of Civilization in Hull will hold a noon-hour demonstration today to say ‘no’ to contracting-out and ‘yes’ to respect for the workers. And, in a show of solidarity and support, these Security Officers will be joined at the demonstration by other Alliance members working at the Museum.

"Laying off the 17 part-time and casual workers at the Museum of ‘Non-Civilization’ and replacing them by a private-for-profit contractor will reduce the quality of service at an increased cost to Canadian taxpayers," says Ed Cashman, president of the PSAC’s National Component. "These workers earn an average of $12 per hour, are dedicated and have, in fact, been praised by their employer for their superior work. If the museum management wants to reduce costs they should cut waste and not workers," he adds.

The demonstration will be held:

Date: Friday, March 3, 2000

Time: 12 noon to 1 p.m.

Place: Museum of Civilization, 100 Laurier, Hull, Quebec

Spokesperson: Ed Cashman, President, National Component of the PSAC
