Ottawa - Close to 800 trade unionists from across Canada will gather for the 12th Triennial Convention of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) which begins in Ottawa on May 1 and continues through to May 5th.

The week-long convention will be launched with a Press Conference on April 30th.

Location:                  Capital Hall 6-A, Ottawa Congress Centre

Date and Time:         Sunday, April 30th at 2:00 pm

Speakers:       Daryl Bean, President of the Public Service Alliance of Canada,

Nycole Turmel, National Executive Vice-President, and

After 15 years as President of the PSAC, Daryl Bean is retiring and elections will be held during the Convention to determine a successor. During his tenure the 58-year-old Bean has led the struggle on several landmark issues including the fight for pay equity, the achievement of political rights for federal public sector workers, and the 1991 federal public service strike. Elections will also be held for the position of National Vice-President as well as for the seven Regional Executive Vice-Presidents.

During the opening press conference on Sunday, Daryl Bean will underscore key issues related to the Convention theme of "Our work, Our union, Our Future", as well as to inform on Convention highlights such as the financial debate and proposed dues increase, elections of the new Alliance Executive Committee (AEC), and major resolutions calling for further action on the implementation of pay equity to other unionized employers, the unwarranted confiscation of the pension surplus of federal employees and subsequent legal action initiated by the PSAC, as well as the use of casual and student labour to fill contracted positions rather than to create permanent jobs.
