PSAC passes landmark decision

Ottawa - Delegates to the 12th Triennial Convention of the Public Service Alliance of Canada made union history today when they voted overwhelming for a Constitutional change which will see eight members from equity-seeking groups automatically seated at this and all future Conventions of the PSAC.

The change, which required at least a two-thirds majority, means that eight members representing members with disabilities and racially-visible, Aboriginal, and Gay, Lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered members took their seats at the Convention around mid-day immediately following the landmark decision.

Out-going President Daryl Bean urged delegates to vote in favour of the resolution saying: "One small step towards bringing some balance to the supreme governing body of this union should not be too much to take. While I have some understanding of the challenges facing the equity groups, I don’t pretend to have the same knowledge as those who are living it. Fact is, we need these voices, we need these delegates, we need this amendment."

In spite of financial difficulties, delegates to the Convention confirmed the PSAC’s commitment to ensuring voice and vote for its equity members.

Wilma Findlay, a member of the National Equal Opportunities Committee which prepared the original motion leading to the Constitutional change, noted: "This Convention is showing true leadership, even in hard-times, by taking this meaningful step. Our union continues to evolve as an organization which stands fast on justice and equality."

The PSAC represents more than 140,000 workers. It’s Convention continues in Ottawa through to Friday, May 5th.
