Association of Public Service Alliance Retirees

The Association of Public Service Alliance Retirees

APSAR members

APSAR members, particularly retired former PSAC members, and the spouses of retired former PSAC members, are the ones who govern the entire activities and operations of the Association by electing the members of their National Council.

Retired former PSAC members want to ensure the protection of their pension plan in order to secure all the benefits of the pension plan to which they contributed during their working life.

PSAC members are also workers who belong to the 17 unions in the Public Service Alliance of Canada structure, and who want to follow closely and understand the development of their pension plan, governed by the Public Service Superannuation Act (PSSA).

Under its Constitution, an APSAR member may be:

  • A retired former member of the Public Service Alliance of Canada;
  • The spouse of a retired former PSAC member;
  • A member of the Public Service Alliance of Canada;
  • A former member of the Public Service Alliance of Canada;
  • A Local from one of the 17 PSAC Components;
  • A direct charter Local;
  • A PSAC area council;
  • A PSAC regional women's committee;
  • A PSAC executive region;
  • A PSAC Component or union;
  • Any other committee recognized in the PSAC structure.

To become an APSAR member, all one has to do is complete a membership form, sign it and pay a yearly contribution of $20.00.

The impact of being a member of the Association is important for the raison d'être of the organization.

The interest in the membership of PSAC members, former PSAC members, retired former PSAC members, and their spouses, and the entire PSAC structure, shows the seriousness of their support to their pension plan, the benefits of which are governed under the Public Service Superannuation Act (PSSA).

The number of members and the input of the PSAC structure have a direct impact on the Association's flexibility to intervene in all aspects of the reform of the Public Service Superannuation Act (PSSA), the Canada pension plan (CPP) and the Old Age Security (OAS), the main source of income once the member has retired.

Since our pension plan is not negotiable, APSAR members have the opportunity of giving themselves a vital means whereby the issues of pension, of pension-related income, the benefits tied to the contributions to their plan and the reforms advocated by governments, be continually on the agenda through their Association.

It's the members who chose their representatives every 3 years at a national election throughout Canada, following a process approved by the members at the national convention held every 3 years, where all the members are entitled to participate and speak out under the Association Constitution.
