August 7, 2008August 06 – Parks Demo at Green GablesParks membrs gave up their noon break to protest Govermen’t disrespect for their work. One year since their collective agreement expired and no reasonable wage offer. They also handed out information on the discrimination in their pay due to zones. Parks workers at other sites wore black t-shirts in support.

May 14, 2008Coast Guard Members Assist with NB Floods
On the morning of May 2nd, the Canadian Coast Guard received a call from New Brunswick EMO to assist with the efforts of the rising waters of the Saint John River. Environmental Response from Saint John, Charlottetown, Dartmouth, and Port Hawkesbury gathered their equipment and answered the call. Landing craft, called Sea Trucks and crews from Charlottetown, Saint John and Dartmouth as well as crew from Port Hawkesbury were mustered and on their way by mid day. The first sea trucks arrived on scene and launched by late afternoon. Early evening the crews from Charlottetown and Saint John received their first mission to assist DND who already in the process of rescuing a herd of milk and beef cattle numbering approximately 150 from down river. The Coast Guard was tasked with rescuing the smaller animals as they had the best vessels to carry out that task. The rescue of the animals went without any problems and were loaded on tractor trailer transport trucks and relocated to the Sussex area. Additional missions for the Coast Guard were to load emergency supplies, such as limited quantities of gasoline and diesel, water, and food rations on the Sea Trucks to act as a floating platform and various fire department and other vessels would take the supplies to those who required them. The Coast Guard was also tasked with removing floating debris and propane tanks from the river. On Monday, May 5th, the waters were lowering. Coast Guard was no longer required to assist and packed up their equipment and returned to their respective areas. Those form the Environmental Response branch of the Coast Guard who responded were Ron MacKay, Ryan Green, Allan Loughran, Paul Roberts, Willard Kelly, Jake MacDonald, Tom Wilkinson, Mike Earle, Chris Purcell, and Vanity Mistry. Representatives of the PSAC participated in a Health Care demonstration today in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of Quebec, who have been targeted as ground zero for privatization of the Health care in Canada. On May 3rd fifty different unions, student organizations and activists will be on the streets in Quebec to oppose the apparent drift to the 2 tier health care system. Carl Pursey, President of the PEI Federation of Labour, opened the 7th annual Day of Mourning Ceremony honouring workers killed or injured on the job. Labour Minister, Carolyn Bertram and Charlene MacInnis, an injured worker, also spoke to the issue. Five members of the PSAC along with Acting PSAC Rep for PEI, Scott Gallant, were in attendance. The ceremony was held at the workers monument in front of the Coles Building in Charlottetown.
April 14, 2008Employment Equity WeekMembers of UVAE and management of Veterans Affairs head office celebrated “Employment Equity Week” between March 10 -14. This year’s theme was “It’s a Small World”. Veterans Affairs opened their doors to the multicultural Council, The Newcomer Association, Council of the Disabled, CNIB and the PEI Human Rights Committee.
There was a delicious international food extravaganza. Several information tables were set up and a week of workshops, videos (Martin Luther King I have a dream) and speakers including this years Easter Seal Ambassador.

This meeting was held to discuss the barriers that Racially Visible members are facing in the union at the Leadership level and the short term and long term solutions.

PSAC donates Beef to Local Food BanksClients of food banks in Charlottetown and Summerside will benefit from the annual Easter Beef Auction. The PSAC and the Agriculture Component purchased one of the prize steers. Gary Paynter, President of PSAC Agriculture Local 90004, said the union is promoting the beef industry on P.E.I. through this donation. “We represent technicians and inspectors from the Island, so it’s important to support them.” The donation not only provides the union with an opportunity to donate to the Island’s food banks, but it also serves as a gesture of goodwill towards the beef industry and underlines the service the Canadian Food Inspection Agency provides to the public, Paynter said in a statement. The union participated in the same auction last year and hope to make this an annual event. Each package of meat will have stickers indicating the beef was donated by PSAC.
