Canada Post Corporation
PSAC, UPCE Pay Equity campaign at Canada Post
SEPTEMBER 24, 2003
Union members, retired members and staff congregated at the J.K.
Wylie boardroom of the PSAC headquarters in Ottawa to mark the 20th
anniversary of the pay equity fight at Canada Post.
The PSAC National President Nycole Turmel and UPCE President Luc
Guevremont gave speeches of solidarity to UPCE members, encouraging
them to see the fight to the end. They also welcomed and thanked
those who attended the event for their show of support and solidarity.
UCTE Ontario Regional Vice-President Christine Collins, who is one
of the many union activists involved in the pay equity fight against
Treasury Board, also gave an inspirational speech to UPCE members.
She gave an account of her own experience during the 15-year
Treasury Board struggle and assured the members that they, too, will
see victory.
A final presentation was given by UPCE member Sylvaine Dumas, who
also gave an account of her own experience in the Canada Post pay
equity complaint and thanked PSAC and all union members for their
support.
The 20-year pay equity complaint at Canada Post involves clerical
staff who were paid less than another group of Canada Post employees
for work of equal value. The hearings at the Canadian Human
Rights Tribunal ended in late August, and the Tribunal will likely
take another year to release a decision.
