Election Day at PSAC Convention

John Gordon has been elected as the PSAC National President. Gordon has been PSAC's National Executive Vice-President since 2000. Competing against three other candidates, Gordon was elected on the third ballot. Over 400 Convention delegates participated in this process.

Turmel: This union is too important to all of us

Tributes to outgoing President Nycole Turmel have been the order of the day, even in Parliament. On May 1, BQ MP Vivian Barbot rose in the House of Commons to recognize Nycole Turmel's hard work and contribution, such as the union's federal pay equity settlement and the Social Justice Fund.

$145,000 for Ekati mine workers from PSAC delegates in Toronto

Delegates pledged in excess of $45,000 to help members of PSAC Local 3050 on strike against BHP Billiton at the Ekati diamond mine, 300 kilometers north-east of Yellowknife. This amount comes in addition to the $100,000 already pledged by the UNW for its hardship fund.

Delegates had an opportunity to hear from three outstanding speakers during the convention's human rights forum. Sandra Carnegie-Douglas described the impact of race, poverty and violence on the African-Canadian community, particularly in Ontario.

Political action and social justice focus of pre-convention forum

"Political and social action are a long-standing priority for the PSAC," said PSAC National President Turmel when she opened the pre-convention forum on political action and social justice. "Political action is an important tool in our struggle. Over the past three years, PSAC has taken political action to a new level. Members from coast to coast to coast mobilized and took action around federal strikes, federal and provincial elections, and so much more."
