Halabecki back as Ontario REVP with DeSousa as new Alternate
On May 4, Gerry Halabecki was re-elected by acclamation to his fourth term as Regional Executive Vice-President for Ontario at the PSAC's regional convention in Toronto. Gerry was first elected REVP in 2000. He currently shares responsibility for collective bargaining and is the elected officer assigned to the Technical Services bargaining unit.
PSAC Canada Employment and Immigration Union member Sharon DeSousa was elected to her first term as Alternate REVP. Sharon, a member of the Program and Administrative Services bargaining team, also represents the PSAC on the Ontario Federation of Labour's Visible Minority Committee.
Think Public was a recurring theme throughout the convention. PSAC National President John Gordon and NDP MP for Trinity-Spadina Olivia Chow spoke of the need to defend quality public services. “Don't let Harper take a bite out of public services!” cookies were handed out. Their message: it's safe to take a bite thanks to public services provided by both federal grain inspectors and municipal health inspectors. Delegates who participated in a speaker's corner were filmed talking about the value of the public services they provide.
The Convention also saw the launch of a YouTube video challenge to members in the region to come up with their own Think Public videos. Winners will receive prizes and have their videos posted on the web. More details are available at ontario.psac.com.
Over 350 delegates and observers attended the convention which took place from May 2 to 4, 2008.
