PSAC Concerned about Pay Centre Announcement

John Gordon, PSAC National President, was in the media today to voice concern over the government's recent announcement to establish a pay centre in Miramichi, New Brunswick.  You can read the main stories in the Ottawa Citizen and Le Droit (French only).

  • Compensation Advisors and other payroll workers provide an essential service and deserve to be treated fairly.

  • Given the essential nature and complexity of pay administration, we are concerned that by not consulting the workers who do these jobs and have the expertise in pay administration, nor the union that represents them, the government could be creating more problems.

  • The PSAC is supportive of improving the pay administration system.  Among the important reforms not addressed in the government's announcement was the recommendation in the House of Commons report entitled The Right Pay for Valuable Employees: “That the government take immediate action to provide equitable pay for compensation advisors in the federal public service and other federal public sector agencies.”

  • This change will affect 46 government departments and agencies spread out across the government and the country.  There are over 1500 Compensation Advisors in the federal government represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada.

  • We are also concerned that the Conservatives are just trying to dampen the public outcry against the potential elimination of the long gun registry, which employs over 200 people in Miramichi.

  • The union will be proactive in representing Compensation Advisors so their collective agreement is respected, and to hold the government to its promise that no compensation employees are at risk of losing their employment.
