Northern members celebrate new Collective Agreement

Fort Smith strike ends: Some of the members of PSAC North/UNW two hours prior to the ratification vote on their new collective agreement that ended the 15-day strike with the Town of Fort Smith, NWT. (Centre: PSAC REVP North Julie Docherty and UNW President Todd Parsons).

More than 60 workers employed by the Town of Fort Smith, NWT, celebrated a big win yesterday that ended a 15-day strike. The three-year contract includes the Union’s “No Contracting Out” language that was a sticking point in negotiations as well as wage and Northern Allowance increases of 2.5%, 2.5% and 2.0%, and many other improvements.“The strength on the picket lines, members’ determination and solidarity were key to our success,” notes PSAC North REVP Julie Docherty. “The strikers were composed of many young activists that developed their skills and abilities and made us proud. I’m certain that many of them will become future leaders of PSAC.”
