PSAC Solidarity for CFS National Day of Action

On February 1, students across the country will be mobilizing in support of quality, accessible post-secondary education.

PSAC supports the Day of Action and stands in solidarity with students across the country. The right to a post-secondary education that is both affordable and high quality is one we all share.

Students and young workers have been hit especially hard by the recession and the slow economic recovery. University graduates are not finding decent work; instead they are being forced to take multiple temporary and part-time jobs which do not provide stable, long-term employment.  Unemployed workers who seek to upgrade their education are finding the costs prohibitive, making it that much harder to secure decent employment.

Unemployment and under-employment rob our communities of income and hurt our long-term economic recovery. Students and young workers cannot build a stable future based on unstable employment. This is especially true when the burden of high student debt is a sad reality – debt incurred because of rising tuition fees.  This is not how we build strong communities and a vibrant country. This is not the future we want.

High quality education should be a quality public service that is accessible to all Canadians. The federal and provincial governments must invest in quality, affordable post-secondary education. This is a right we all share and should be a public service that we all can utilize. This investment will assist students, young workers and all Canadians in realizing their full potential and their ability to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

PSAC joins the Canadian Federation of Students, and students across the country, in calling for:

  • a reduction in tuition fees,
  • ending student debt; and
  • an increase in funding for education.
