Message from President Robyn Benson on World Suicide Prevention Day
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
September 10th, 2012 is World Suicide Prevention Day. The impact on individuals, families and communities when a suicide occurs is devastating. We come together on this day to raise awareness of suicide, support those impacted by suicide and those who struggle with mental health issues that can result in suicide, and celebrate the lives of those who died by suicide.
Of the 4,000 Canadians who die every year as a result of suicide, most were confronting a mental health problem or illness. Suicide and mental health problems and illnesses share many common causes ranging from workplace stress due to job cuts to poverty and other environmental and societal factors.
We all share a responsibility for suicide prevention. Adequate treatment and follow-up care for people who may attempt suicide is essential for suicide prevention. The PSAC recognizes the need for a national suicide prevention strategy which includes adequate resources and prevention programs in communities at the regional and local level. The PSAC supports strengthening of health and safety and labour legislation to protect the mental health of all workers.
In solidarity,
Robyn Benson
National President
