Bill C-377 is another attack on public services

C-377 bad

The Conservative government is cutting public services and jobs while it’s prepared to waste tens of millions of dollars on a punitive, unnecessary and discriminatory private members’ bill.

C-377, a Conservative MP’s private members’ bill, will require unions – and only unions – to provide detailed financial and other information to the Canada Revenue Agency every year.

The Canada Revenue Agency estimates C-377 will cost over $20 million in the first two years and nearly $4 million every year to operate.

The Canadian Bar Association says it’s unconstitutional.

Canada’s Privacy Commissioner says “it’s a serious breach of privacy” for individual Canadians and commercial businesses.

Why waste $20 million and counting when that money could be used to keep veterans’ affairs and EI offices open, to hire more food inspectors, or to protect our environment. CRA could even use it to keep its own service counters open.
