December 10, 1998 Marking the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
On December 10, 1948, the General
Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, which set out fundamental principles for human rights. These include the right to
freedom of peaceful assembly and association, the right to dignity and equality, the right
to be free from arbitrary arrest, the right to marry and to found a family and many other
important rights. This important document called on all member countries to adhere to and
to publicize the text.
December 10, 1998 marked the fiftieth
anniversary of the Declaration. Unfortunately, the Declaration is not as well known or
understood as it should be. In order to continue the process of publicizing this document,
we are providing links to other web sites that contain copies of the Declaration as well
as related information.
Your Local may wish to set some time aside
on December 10th to mark this anniversary/day and have a discussion about the
contents of the Declaration.
