Equal Opportunities Committee

The Equal Opportunities Committee (EOC) is a standing committee mandated to provide advice to the National Board of Directors (the body that runs the union between Triennial Conventions) on various equity issues.In 1999, the representation on the EOC has become more direct.Members represent Components and members belonging to equity groups.

MANDATE OF THE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES COMMITTEE (adopted January 2001 by NBoD)

  • To provide advice and recommendations to the NBoD on equity/human rights issues.

  • To develop a strong link with each Regional Council, including ongoing communication links, between the regions and the EOC, for mutual sharing of information, policy, strategies, etc.

  • To develop a strong link with Components on equity/human rights issues.

  • To identify legislation, policies, provisions or practices that are discriminatory and to recommend union policies, programs or actions that will end and redress the discrimination.

  • To monitor the implementation and effectiveness of employment equity plans and to pursue any corrective action that may be necessary.

  • To educate our members and employers on equity/human rights issues.

  • To identify and to mobilize members through their various constituencies around equity/human rights issues.

  • To proactively identify emerging equity/human rights issues (problems and potential solutions related to our union, to our workplaces and to communities).

  • To develop links and to work more closely with coalition partners and equity/human rights-seeking groups at the local, regional and national levels.

  • To develop and promote a strong communication strategy on equity/human rights issues.

  • To develop the leadership skills of the EOC representatives.

Representation

The EOC is made up of 25 representatives:one representative from each of the 17 Component unions of the PSAC, and eight PSAC Equity Representatives.

The Equity Representatives, one woman and one man for each group, are elected directly by members of their respective equity groups. The Racially Visible and Aboriginal Equity Representatives are elected at the Unity Conference. The Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgendered Equity Representatives are elected at the Pride Conference and the Disability Equity Representatives are elected at the Access Conference.
