PSAC Statement on World AIDS Day

December 1, 2011

The first case of AIDS was diagnosed 30 years ago. Since then, more than 27 million people around the world have died from HIV/AIDS related illnesses. Three out of four people living with HIV in the world are workers, and most of them live in the developing countries. Today, in Canada, it is estimated that 68,000
Canadians live with HIV.

Thankfully, today HIV is no longer a death sentence. However, stigma and discrimination against HIV positive people remain pervasive. HIV doesn't discriminate, so why do we?

In 2008, only 42% of the 9.5 million people around the world in need of antiretroviral therapy had access to these life-saving drugs. Unfortunately, Canada has not lived up to its commitments for international development assistance. PSAC calls on the federal government to increase the resources allocated to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS.

On December 1st, do your part and stand in solidarity with people living with HIV/AIDS here and around the world.
