Trans Day of Remembrance Statement

Trans day of remembrance symbol

November 20 marks Trans Day of Remembrance. On this day, we remember our transgender and transexual brothers and sisters who have suffered, and continue to suffer, from violence, hatred and discrimination in our communities and in our workplaces.

Via campaigns and at the bargaining table, PSAC consistently champions the rights of trans people.

PSAC supports Bill 279, tabled last year by the NDP and now before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. This Bill would amend the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code by adding protections against discrimination and violence based on gender identity and gender expression. In the months to come, PSAC will be joining our efforts with the CLC and with GLBT organizations to win this important law reform.

Transgender and transexual people are our colleagues, our neighbours, our friends and beloved members of our families. They deserve respect, equality and protection from discrimination and violence.
