PSAC statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women

The Harper Conservatives are marking December 6 this year by destroying the federal long-gun registry and its more than seven million records.

December 6 is the day we remember and mourn the 14 women killed at the École Polytechnique in Montreal 22 years ago.  We take time to reflect on this extreme example of violence against women.

The federal long-gun registry was created in response to this tragedy. Since its inception, it has been proven effective in reducing the number of gun-related homicides.

Police across the country consult it 14,000 times a day, helping them both prevent and investigate crimes and trace lost or stolen firearms.

The registry has proven its worth in helping reduce violence.  Eliminating it is yet another example of how this government's cuts to public services are going to harm both individuals and communities.

The PSAC, through the Canadian Labour Congress and in collaboration with the Coalition for Gun Control, is continuing to fight to keep the long-gun registry alive.

Please send a message to your Member of Parliament to say that you support the registry as an essential tool for reducing violence in our society, particularly violence against women.
